Over 3300 ecological distribution conflicts are recorded in the atlas of Such particularly occur at frontiers commodity extraction and waste disposal. Mapping where ecologists work: biases in the global distribution of terrestrial ecological observations

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org T geographical context of field study sites greatly influences the ecological patterns, processes, and dynamics observed in these locations. For this reason, the disciplines of ecology and conservation biology have been criticized for disproportionately conducting field studies in temperate zones (Schoener 1983; Platnick 1991; Colle...

Mapping the complexity of ecological models

We propose to define the complexity of an ecological model as the statistical complexity of the output it produces. This allows for a direct comparison between data and model complexity. Working with univariate time series, we show that this measure ‘blindly’ discriminates among the different dynamical behaviours a model can exhibit. We then search a model parameter space in order to segment it...

Aligning Economic and Ecological Priorities: Conflicts, Complementarities, and Regulatory Frictions

Four key policy challenges, framed here as dichotomies, are commonly associated with attempts to improve the use of natural resources in the socioecological commons. These dichotomies present tradeoffs when addressing market failures and in general seem to suggest the need to settle for second-best outcomes rather than first-best outcomes identified in stylized models. Citing examples, we argue...

War size distribution: Empirical regularities behind conflicts

This paper analyses the statistical distribution of war sizes. Using the method recently proposed by Clauset, Shalizi, and Newman (2009), we find moderate support for a Pareto-type distribution (power law), using data from different sources (COW and UCDP) and periods. A power law accurately describes not only the size distribution of all wars, but also the distribution of the sample of wars in ...

Ecological Strategies and Knowledge Mapping

In this paper we discuss the concept of ecological strategy in relation to cognitive artefacts that reflect the expressive power of learners engaged in the development of significant knowledge paths. Our experiments show that learners strive to make sense of the fragmentary information surrounding them and in this endeavour they may benefit from the creation of knowledge maps, i.e. branched str...
